Domesticated By Amy Stein @ Clampart Gallery -Show Review

Roman Candle by Amy Stein courtesy of the artist and Clampart Gallery

Amy Stein- Domesticated

Every so often , during the six or eleven o’clock local and national news, we hear and see a fox being spotted in Central Park, NYC., or Bears going through the trash in the near Westchester County , even opening doors into houses looking for food, Alligators swimming , sunning in a pool in a Miami , Fla home, and even boa constrictor coming out of a toilet in Brooklyn, NYC . All these out of the blue scenarios happening randomly here and nationwide come to mind, while looking at Amy Stein's Domesticated series.

The real question is who is invading who? Who is the one doing the trespassing? Who is the real perpetrator? Who is the menacing creature? Who is crossing the environmental boundaries established by humans or by the animals? The animals ? or it can maybe the humans?

Is the suburbanization and the constant invasion by humans into nature, to create, more housing and industrialization in areas populated and dominated by all these animal species, creating a social conflict between humans and animals? Are they now retaliating and invading us because we had been destroying their ecosystems?

All these questions come to mind as, I leave NYC in a train ride to Boston and see the city landscape disappear and go though a lot of wooded areas along the road where, most of these critters call home for the time being. It is not kind of hard to tell that, with all the construction and the constant chopping of vegetation and trees how they might have to migrate and the animals looking for food and new living environment will end up in someones backyard or just right in front of you, staring right into your eyes.

All these facts and questions , conflict created are present in the Domesticated series.

Amy Stein Domesticated series are based on real stories of human and animal encounters or interactions in and around the thew small town of Matamoras, Pennsylvania. The stories is based and created on Amy ‘s conversations told by its residents.

Amy
has mastered recreating the photographic scenarios with a subtle and quite disturbing brilliance. The photos regardless the subject are created with great printing quality. In most cases the photographs from far away look like great and rather painterly landscapes, next door looking homes and urban looking settings and they are in so many was but, then there is the encounter or challenge between humans and animals. One of my favorites of the show is Roman Candle (shown above), where two adolescents get ready to attack a cornered raccoon. The taxidermy raccoon eyes almost come alive and stare right at you. The staging of it, it is just brilliant.

In addition of being a photographer, Amy is a professor and by saying this, she is teaching us a lesson with Domesticated... The animals deserve respect and in some cases, the space that we have been appropriating from them over the years. Go and see this show and you will learn your lesson.

As I almost finish writing this review, my cat Gia just jumped on my laptop almost erasing most of this review because, I was not paying her attention and feeding her on time...I think, I just had a Domesticated moment...

Gagosian hits the retail world!

Jeff Koons's 1998 "Puppy Vase" (shown with flowers)

The new Larry Gagosian retail store at the corner of Madison Avenue and 77th Street is a dream where Art and Commerce have no shame or make any apologies. Featuring the work, limited editions and book of most artists from the Gagosian empire, this venture once again sets him apart and ahead from other galleries, institutions and any other art related business.

One of the items for sale is Jeff Koons, Puppy Vase, 1998 featured here in the photo. I remember not too long ago, I had a chance to purchase one for only $550.00 ...now a couple of years later and at a edition of 3,000.00, it will cost you a mere $7.500.00. I knew it but, was always concerned since it is made out of porcelain, about cracks or chipping it. Oh well next time, I will take that chance!

Please read more about Gagosian here form Artinfo.com:

Pseudodocumentation: Lightrods, 2008
Lightjet print

This is a great show worth seeing!
The photographs are greatly executed and possess such beautiful quality. A very intricate and creative process with great visual results. The photographs are quite monumental in size and in this case it justifies the effort. Please go to DUMBO and see it.

The Randall Scott Gallery is pleased to present our September exhibition; A two person exhibition by David DiMichele: Pseudodocumentation and Chris Anthony: Stages from September 10th-October 17th 2009. Also on exhibition in our Project Room: new photographs by Lara Jo Regan.

Los Angeles based artist David DiMichele creates the fantastic. His environments follow contemporary trend to construct the monumental, to surround the viewer with visual stimulus. His work however is assembled, not in the cavernous halls and galleries of museums and art centers, but on a table in his studio.

DiMichele builds his environments as finely detailed dioramas and then he photographs them. His “pseudodocumentary” photographs comment on the way we see and experience the monumental art that it pays homage to. Not often can the public experience the physical sense of an enormous installation. Most commonly, we see the work through a reproduction or website. Working in this manner, DiMichele can take the “installation shot” much further. Controlling light, angle and composition. And heighten the experience.

Steve Miller-ROOTS @ Robin Rice Gallery 9/16/09

Steve Miller, Banjo
Tonight!
Don't miss it!
See you there!

The Robin Rice Gallery announces "Roots", a solo exhibition of 14 digital X-ray images by artist and photographer Steve Miller. The opening reception will be held on September 16th, 2009. The show runs through October 25th.

While all photography arrests motion, it is only the X-ray that allows us to climb inside a particular moment and subject and parse the structure of its beauty from within. Steve Miller’s X-ray photographs, 13 black and white carbon on cotton prints and 1 glass plate mounted on steel, do the trick. Miller’s work lifts the lid off a hidden domain, revealing the stilled and remarkable innards of things we pass by every day.

Orchid bulbs perch on lacy roots, music thrums from a plucked string, a foot punches a ball into the air. Miller removes plants, musical instruments, and soccer balls from their usual context and fixes them under the omniscient, scrutinizing eye of the digital X-ray. The inner world rises to the outer. Smoky, ethereal tulips bend, mid-wilt; seeds nestle within nearly invisible pods; the guitar’s translucent body rests in its case, snug as if in an ancient sarcophagus. Miller distills all action, feeling, and process so that only the essential remains, and in carefully rendered black, white, and film-noir gray, the essential is both clinical and glamorous.

What was hidden is now revealed, and the empty space within his subjects speaks to their potential fullness. At the same time, that new vision brings with it an unsettling awareness of our own inner workings, our fundamental material essence, and ultimately, our human susceptibility to the processes of time.

In the past 25 years, Steve Miller has presented 31 solo exhibitions at major institutions in the United States, China, France, and Germany. His exhibitions have been reviewed in Le Monde, SĂĽddeutsche Zeitung, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, ArtForum, ARTnews, and Art in America. Miller was one of the first artists to experiment with computers in the early 1980’s, and his work today continues to integrate science and technology with fine art. This is his first solo show of photography. To view exhibition, please visit www.robinricegallery.com.

Lucky YOU, Lucky ME

Tracey Baran (American, b. 1975)

Club Valentine, 2003

C-print

Folks!

Doing your homework ALWAYS pays off. After seeing Tracey Baran Show last Saturday, I really became and made everybody around me obsessed with her photographic work.

Collecting photography and getting work from an artist that died at such a early age like Tracey is very, very hard. I saw the price list at the gallery and also knew that the edition are only of 5 and most of it, it is sold out and its current pricing (well deserved and so worth it) it is going up by the minute.

Well... my dear collector friend and photo editor Cesar Llacuna got an earful from me after seeing the show and, he set the wheels in motion and managed to get for him and ME the very last two edition prints that Tracey did a while back for a very very affordable price! Special thanks to Cesar, and Sara Miller,Membership and Fine Print Coordinator
Museum of Contemporary Photography @ MoCP, Chicago
.

One of the coolest thing about this image is that you can see Tracey shadow taking the photo .
As time goes on, I will try to get more of her work but, right now, I feel like a very lucky guy!
If anybody know where else, I can find more of her work, please send me an e-mail.

Tracey Baran creates visual journals, using color photography to record and

refine her experiences into images that reference fundamental themes such as

love, death, and regeneration. Baran works in an intuitive manner, making

spontaneous pictures that evidence an insistent process of visual discovery.

During the past decade, Baran has documented her own life and those around

her, including her parents, brother, lovers, and friends. In 2004 she took a road

trip across the country. Instead of documenting the culture and attractions around

her, she chose to create deeply personal images that reflect the process of selfdiscovery

that she experienced during the trip.

Tracey Baran was born in Bath, New York and has lived in New York City since

1993 when she enrolled at the School of Visual Arts. She was the recipient of the

Henry Buhl Foundation Grant First Prize in 2002. Her work is in numerous

collections and has been included in exhibitions at the Guggenheim Museum,

Bilbao, The Milwaukee Art Museum, Pusan Metropolitan Art Museum, South

Korea, and P.S. 1, New York, amongst others.

Sally Mann @ Gagosian Gallery 9/15/09

Gagosian Gallery is pleased to present “Proud Flesh”, a series of new photographs by Sally Mann.
Children, landscape, lovers—these iconic subjects are as common to the photographic lexicon as light itself. But Mann’s take on them, rendered through processes both traditional and esoteric, is anything but common. From the outset of her career she has consistently challenged the viewer, rendering everyday experiences at once sublime and deeply disquieting.
In previous projects, Mann has explored the relationships between parent and child, brother and sister, human and nature, site and history. Her latest photographic study of her husband Larry Mann, taken over six years, has resulted in a series of candid nude studies of a mature male body that neither objectifies nor celebrates the focus of its gaze. Rather it suggests a profoundly trusting relationship between woman and man, artist and model that has produced a full range of impressions – erotic, brutally frank, disarmingly tender, and more. While the relation of artist and model is, traditionally, a male-dominated field that has yielded countless appraisals of the female body and psyche, Mann reverses the role by turning the camera on her husband during some of his most vulnerable moments.
Mann’s technical methods and process further emphasize the emotional and temporal aspects of these fragile life studies. The images are contact prints made from wet-plate collodion negatives, produced by coating a sheet of glass with ether-based collodion and submerging it in silver nitrate. Mann exploits the surface aberrations that can result from the unpredictability of the process to produce painterly photographs marked by stark contrasts of light and dark, with areas that resemble scar tissue. In works such as Hephaestus and Ponder Heart, the scratches and marks incurred in the production process become inseparable from the physical reality of Larry’s body.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a fully illustrated catalogue published in collaboration with Aperture including a text by C.D. Wright.

Sally Mann was born in Lexington, VA in 1951. She has received numerous awards, including three National Endowment for the Arts Fellowships and a Guggenheim Fellowship. Her photographs are in the permanent collections of major museums and private collections including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; and The Corcoran Museum of Art, Washington, D.C.

"Coal Seams" from Removing Mountains, Daniel Shea, 2007

ARTmostfierce Affordable Print Pick of the Week goes to photographer Daniel Shea. Daniel is pursuing a great cause with his work and prints are beautiful and extremely affordable.

See more information below and ...Happy Shopping!

The print sale will support the first visit to the region, after which I plan on working with a few magazines that have shown interest in producing a story about coal burning in this region. With a new administration and a shifting public conscious, I feel very strongly about creating work that is topically relevant and socially engaged. Much like Removing Mountains, I'm interested in providing an alternative to modern photojournalism, and presenting a more involved look into the communities in this region

ABOUT THE PRINTS AND THE SALE, TWO LEVELS OF SPONSORSHIP
:

OPTION ONE:

The images below will be printed one time at the following sizes (for each image's respective proportions):

10"x10" image on 11"x11" paper, edition of 5.
10"x12" image on 11"x13" paper, edition of 5.

All prints will be produced using digital C-printing technology on Fuji Archival Luster paper. Prints will be signed and editioned accordingly.

Each print is $50-75 sliding scale, the price includes shipping to the US (international folks, email me for details). In addition to the editioned print, you will receive a small print from the developing body of work once I get back to Chicago.

OPTION TWO:

I undertstand that $50-75 is a lot of money for most people (myself included). That's why I wanted to offer an alternative to anybody else interested in sponsoring the project but who can't quite afford a $50-75 print.

On a $15-25 sliding scale, choose an image on my website and I will send you an uneditioned 8"x10" of that print.

The print will either be an archival Inkjet print or a digital C-Print and the signature will designate the image as not part of any edition.

PICTURES OF TRACEY

Photographs by Tracey Baran (1975–2008)

September 12– October 17, 2009

The exhibition celebrates the life and work of Tracey Baran who died after a brief illness in November 2008 at the age of 33.

Tracey Baran was born in 1975 in Bath, a small rural town in western New York State. In 1993, when she arrived in New York City to attend the School of Visual Arts, she began to define and record the story of her life in pictures of herself, her family, and friends, and the rustic landscape of her childhood. Possessing an unusual blend of candor and empathy, her photographs intermingle spontaneously-recorded moments with posed and directed depictions that resonate with intense feeling, a painterly sensibility and her consummate skill as a color printer.

In her essay written for Tracey Baran’s solo exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, curator Karen Irvine compared Baran’s photographs to those of William Eggleston, writing that, “like Eggleston, Baran is fluent in the expressive capacity of color photography and she often counterbalances the formal beauty of her pictures with a certain unsettling ambiguity.”

The exhibition, our third solo presentation of works by the artist, will include seventeen large-scale prints made by the artist between 1998 and 2008. A selection of smaller, unfinished “work prints” will also be displayed.

In the introduction to his interview with Tracey Baran for Uovo Magazine (2006), the critic and poet Barry Schwabsky wrote:

From the moment I first saw Tracey Baran’s work, back in 1998, it’s haunted me. Tracey was just 23 then, but already there was something preternaturally self-aware in her photographic gaze. Turning her camera on her family, her friends and herself, she was making pictures with a rare combination of empathy and frankness – producing images somehow at once oblique and confrontational, emotionally raw and formally self-possessed. I wondered how someone so young could look at things so knowingly. Eight years later, having watched her work steadily deepening, I’m even more nonplussed. Why should images – especially ones of what is after all a most ordinary American life – be so physically compelling?

Tracey Baran’s first one-person exhibition took place in 1998 at the Liebman Magnan Gallery in New York. She had six additional solo shows, including a 2002 exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago, and participated in more than thirty group shows at galleries and museums throughout the world, including, among others, the Guggenheim Museum (New York and Bilbao), the Folkwang Museum, Essen; P.S. 1/MoMA, New York; The Milwaukee Art Museum; and the Pusan Metropolitan Art Museum, Korea.

She was the recipient of several grants and awards including the Henry Buhl Foundation Grant (first prize) in 2002, the Aaron Siskind Foundation Individual Photographer’s Fellowship in 2005, and the Santa Fe Center for Photography Juror’s Choice Grant in 2006. Her work is included in the collections of the Hessel Museum of Art at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, NY; the Milwaukee Art Museum; the Miami Art Museum, and other institutions.

The Tracey Baran Memorial Auction in support of The Tracey Baran Award, an annual grant for an emerging female photographer established by the artist’s family and friends, will take place from September 15 through September 30 at igavel.com.
